Chitralekha Singh.

I'm a painter and art historian, now working primarily in ceramics.

I grew up in Bishrampur, in the forested Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh — surrounded by tribal art: the wall paintings, the Godna art form, the textile and ornamental traditions of central India. That world — its motifs, its quiet sacredness of the everyday, its centring of feminine life — is what my hands return to.

In 2023 I moved fully into ceramics. Earthique is the studio that practice now lives in — small, slow, hand-made. My pieces carry forward the place I come from and all the years of art behind me: nature, ornament, the everyday made with care, made with love.

“Ceramic is a kind of art therapy. It makes everything slow — and in a city that doesn't allow slowness, that is exactly why I come to it.”

— Chitralekha
